Added 2GB of RAM and Vista hits back

I just increased the memory from 1GB to 3GB on my machine and Vista Ultimate jumped from 550MB to a massive 1.2GB of ram taken with just media center running. Wow!

I didn't expect the amount of system memory to explode like that. Still, despite this, the machine is a lot more responsive with the extra memory so no complaints but the extra fat thrown on by Vista is unexpected.

It's an "adaptative feature" of Vista: the memory free you have, the more it will use (read on SuperFetch for details).
