Best Buy rip off

So

Best Buy wanted 650 dollars plus tax for a new motherboard for my Gateway 840GM. No way I was paying that for a 140 buck repair. They diagnosed it on Friday evening. They called me on Monday. I went to the store on Wed to say fix it. They told me after 72 hours, they automatically return it. I said, it hasn't been 72 hours. They count from diagnosis not from when they tell you. Still, I paid em 70 bucks to tell me whats wrong so that was ok.

I picked it up when it arrived and brought it home. The motherboard looks like a Gateway special. Intel makes it. It's an Intel Desktop Board D945GBI. I can't find even a mention of this board on the Intel site. I bought a BOXD945GBOLKR which is an Intel D945GBO board which is almost identical from what I can tell. It should fit just fine, has all the same devices. The only difference is that the original board had an extra PCI socket on the end of the board for a modem which I don't need.

I just ordered the board and it'll be here on Thursday. 120 bucks for the board including shipping and taxes. I need to get some heat sink compound and then I'll post on swapping the board over during the weekend with results.

I got a board as close as possible with my own so that I shouldn't need to reinstall the operating system or drivers etc, thats a major pain so hopefully, I won't have to do any of that when the board is replaced.

I'm late to the party, but if you still haven't gotten to putting your new board in and getting some CPU compound, I've got a few tubes of it lying around you can use.

I will be needing a motherboard to fit in my 840 GM. Did the one you got do the job for you . What processor and heatsink did you end up using. I have a 2.8 Dual Core that I expect will work. Let me know .

I am having the same problem finding a replacement motherboard for a d945gbi. gateway wants 350 for 1. I found a d945gbo for 89. Did you have any problems with the swap? The physical size is about 3/4" smaller than the d945gbi but mounts to a plate. I am sure I can make that fit. What about the OS and drivers? Any real problems? Thanks
