James McLurkin and robot swarms

I'm at an IBM awards conference this week and today I saw James give his pitch on swarm robotics. His web page is at http://people.csail.mit.edu/jamesm/swarm.php.

His pitch was cool, he has lots of little cube robots which communicate with each other using swarm logic to do things like find objects in a large space, explore space etc. He described some of the problems and approaches he takes for solving distributed computing in the context of his swarm bots. Several of them are very familiar to me in the context of group services. Indeed, he had his swarmbots elect two leaders concurrently when they partitioning in to two groups by accident during his demo.

All in all, interesting.
